We believe that
students learn best by being actively engaged in creating their
own knowledge within an enriching academic and socially
responsible environment.
Happy
Hollow provides an environment that offers students the
resources and time to explore, experiment, and engage in
constructivist learning at its best. We utilize the best
research and materials to guide our curriculum choices in
relation to language arts, literacy, math, science, social
science, creative arts, movement and music. Teachers use direct
instruction, guided instruction, role playing, role modeling and
free play exploration within a child-centered learning
environment that accommodates, challenges and respects the
varied abilities, developmental levels, interests and learning
styles of all young learners. Multi-sensory instruction, both in
small group and individual settings, accommodates all learning
styles while direct instruction provides students with many
opportunities to learn how to follow instructions and challenge
their attention span. We believe that within this enriched and
creative environment students have the opportunity to gain self
confidence, experiment with and practice academic skill sets,
practice social responsibility and respect, and develop to their
full potential as important members of their community.
Our
program encompasses all the standard goals and objectives
from Oregon's Common Core State Standards in all subject areas.
Teachers utilize student portfolios that gather picture/sample
work related information to compile daily assessment information
in relation to student development towards subject areas and
state standards. Two parent/teacher conferences are
scheduled each year to provide an overview of individual
assessment information. The literacy, language arts, math,
science, social science, geography and art curriculum is
literature-based meaning teachers use specific books to teach
interesting ideas that tie all subject areas together into a
more complete knowledge base. In addition, direct instruction is
used to teach phonetics using the Spalding method, which is a
multi-sensory intensive, phonetic based, integrated language
arts method recommended in Becoming a Nation of Readers.
Math skills are presented using Bridges in Mathematics, which
uses extensive visual models, interactive games, literacy and
manipulatives to provide a constructivist approach to teaching
mathematical concepts and computational skills. Students learn
to use numbers to represent quantities, solve qualitative
problems, describe their physical world, use geometrical ideas
and language, and test spatial reasoning. Developed by the Math
Learning Center, an Oregon Nonprofit, and funded by the National
Science Foundation, this engaging and interesting multi-sensory
approach to math helps students master both essential skills and
mathematical concepts. Students learn how to solve a wide range
of math problems in real world situations and foster students'
interest and enjoyment of all things mathematical!
